Peas and beans
In recent years, due to price volatility and increasing focus on environmental factors, many of our customers have turned to us to help them process and preserve home-grown or locally-sourced proteins in order to become more self-sufficient, try to increase their profitability and reduce their carbon footprint.
We have worked closely with a group of forward-thinking farmers and the Processors & Growers Research Organisation to fine-tune the advice we give to make best use of peas and beans. This has led to us being invited to be partners in the Innovate UK funded NCS project.
Our involvement in the project will allow us to accelerate the work and provide a ‘best practice blueprint’ for on-farm protein use. We can also evaluate a range of harvesting equipment to reduce field losses and carbon footprint, and carry out detailed wet chemistry analysis and laboratory scale fermentation trials, all of which is subcontracted to independent silage scientist Dr Dave Davies.
Our current preferred options based on the work we have done so far include:
- Wholecropping beans or pea/bean mixes
- Crimping pea/bean mixes or beans mixed with a co-product such as draff or brewers grains
- Treating with Propcorn NC
- Tempering and treating with Proflake NC
