Back to basics on silage preservation and protection

tractor and combine harvesting home-grown forage

Good practices in silage preservation and compaction are key to making great silage and minimising fermentation losses during storage and aerobic losses during feed out. The proven products outlined below are designed to help you retain the maximum feed value in your silage.

Safesil Pro is the ideal treatment for high dry matter silage where aerobic deterioration is a concern. Safesil Pro ensures long-term stability in the open clamp and during feed-out, minimising nutrient loss and mycotoxin formation.

Safesil Challenge is ideal for treating grass, grass/clover, legume and arable silages with DM content below 30%. Its ability to eradicate harmful clostridia and enterobacteria ensures a controlled, effective fermentation in high-buffering, low-sugar and lower dry matter forage.

SilaPactors are the heavyweight answer to making light work of compaction. Available in a range of widths from 2.1 metres to 4 metres weighing from 2.5 to 6.0 tonnes, a SilaPactor will speed up the compaction process, saving both time and fuel, and can increase dry matter compaction density by up to 40% when compared to conventional tractor rolling.

Wholecrop boost for milk from forage

Producing milk from forage is a key target for every dairy producer, and wholecrop cereals can play a significant role in this ambition. Starch levels potentially approaching 30% and high levels of structural fibre to aid rumen function both contribute to good animal performance from this relatively easy-to-grow forage.

Zero-tolerance of mouldy bales leads contractor to BaleSafe

Making hay and straw is an important part of contractor James MacDonald’s business, so he takes a zero-tolerance approach to mouldy or heated bales. As a result, BaleSafe has become a regular part of his armoury, which he uses at any point he feels moistures are too high or the weather is threatening.
