Award-winning farm manager joins Kelvin Cave team

Kelvin Cave Ltd is delighted to announce that acclaimed former farm manager, Steve Jones, has joined its team.

Steve will be sharing his depth of knowledge and passion for agriculture with farmers across South and West Wales, aiming to help them conserve the type of forage and home-grown feeds for which he has gained awards and recognition.

Bringing an extra dimension as the former manager of three college or university farms (he’s run Bridgwater College and Glasgow and Aberystwyth University farms), Steve has always enjoyed his involvement with research, upgrading the farms and passing on information to students.

Throughout this time, he has lifted some of the farms’ performance from the mediocre to the exceptional, often bringing them into the UK’s top 10%. The high yielding herds he has managed have consistently produced quality milk (4.2% fat, 3.5% ptn) with outstanding fertility and milk from forage.

Aware that good forage is at the heart of health and performance, he says: “I have always found that high quality forage makes it far easier to put diets together and when you start to grow your own concentrates too – whether cereals or protein crops – they appear to work better than bought-in ingredients.”

As a result of Steve’s knowledge and ability, he has been a regular winner of national grassland and silage competitions.

A regular user of Kelvin Cave products, he says: “I have seen for myself that they do the job. One of the university herds had an extremely wide silage face, which the herd was slow to move across. But the Safesil product we used always preserved the forage quality and kept it extremely cool.”

Prior to working as a farm manager, Steve worked on a family farm and now helps family members with their own beef and sheep enterprises.

He says: “My philosophy is that there is never a problem; only the answer. So, I am looking forward to this new challenge!”
